Quogue Gallery Makes its Scope Miami Beach Debut

Booth A13 Features Rising Talent Liz Sloan

Quogue, N.Y., November 22, 2016. For its Scope Miami debut, the Quogue Gallery is tapping the resounding success of a solo exhibition this summer of Liz Sloan’s energetic paintings, wall reliefs and sculpture. Scope Miami Beach runs from Tuesday, November 29 to Sunday, December 4, 2016 at Ocean Drive and 8th Street.

The special presentation at Scope is titled “Visual Looping” to emphasize the geometric resonance of the artist’s compositions. Sloan’s aesthetic melds a classically Modernist commitment to geometry with elements of Asian artistic and spiritual principles; the connection is harmonized by the deft personal touch of this painter and master of design. Her acclaimed show in August/September, 2016 at the Quogue Gallery, titled “Ki Path” in reference to the Japanese term for “spirit” or “energy,” was widely praised by critics in reviews published by Hamptons Art Hub and On the Inside.

There is a metaphysical dimension to the way Sloan delves the oval as motif, just as she channeled the Ki or life energy so essential to an understanding of Zen. As she says, “Ovals are the subject of my art. They illustrate movement in the physical world and possess kinetic energy. They release emotion—highlighting optimism, flexibility, balance and melody. The motion of drawing an oval reflects something elemental about oneself. It’s an intuitive gesture, meant to be experienced in the present.”

Liz Sloan’s new work probes the resonant meanings and visual possibilities of the oval, one of the great iconographic elements in the history of art. It is more than a symbol or guide for composition. Its archetypal significance has been explored by artists through the ages, from Leonardo da Vinci (who wrote extensively about the patterns of waves when a rock is dropped in water and made the circle the central part of his iconic Vitruvian Man drawing) to the great Cubist master Robert Delaunay and onward to the Minimalist masterpieces of Robert Mangold. The wit and wisdom of Sloan’s entry into this great tradition plays on her titles and the looping jouissance of her visual imagination.

A hallmark of Sloan’s technique is the ability to think in three dimensions, drawing on her firm grasp of fine art, design and construction principles. Her long-term commitment to painting comes together with collage and assemblage, all unified by the thematic use of the oval. As the artist explains in a statement:

I go back to my roots as an oil painter and designer to create collage and 3D paintings using both found objects and pre-designed Lucite, aluminum, wood and paper pieces. Painting with more than oils reflects how many resources are available to an artist today and how viable all of them are. In my 3D work I combine pencil lines with pre-designed Lucite ovals that have been manipulated with paper and paint and are suspended away from the traditional picture plane.

Liz Sloan was born in Syracuse and grew up in Ridgewood, New Jersey as well as New York City. A fine arts major who graduated from Colgate University, she became a professional jewelry and interior designer. In addition to her time at the drafting table, she has steadily been painting and for more than 35 years has studied under the tutelage of the master of collage at the Art Students League, Bruce Dorfman. She lives and works in New York and Southampton.
